Purpose
The purpose of the assignment was to undertake interim management roles across a variety of teams and specialism to add capacity, develop and lead projects, improve the quality of care through Essence of Care benchmarking, and audit systems and processes to identify and develop
improvement plans.
Aims and Objectives
The interim managers were intended to undertake:
- The development of a tool to undertake an audit on adult protection
- KSF appraisals
- Adding capacity for day-to-day management of community dental services
- The design and implementation of an Essence of Care programme
- The development of a commissioning model for integrated children’s therapy services
- To support the development of quality systems, to audit and benchmark service delivery
Activities Delivered
OUK interim managers achieved the intended outcomes
through:
- Working at all levels of the organisation to deal with complex management and service delivery issues
- Identifying what needed to be done, and bringing drive and energy to create momentum, challenge the status quo, inspire and empower others and meet challenging targets
- Recognising the impact of HR changes on individuals, teams and services and addressing arising issues
- Making decisions about the future, based on the present, in order to achieve service and health improvement
- Undertaking staff appraisals for staff who felt marginalised within the Trust eg. due to working unsociable working hours or being unable to participate in wider PCT activities
- Facilitating contributions from others, nurturing capability and development and encouraging people to take on more responsibility
- Workforce development to ensure that staff possessed the transferable skills necessary to apply new processes
- The development of tools which staff members understood and owned
- The audit of services to ensure care delivery was safe and of high quality
- Ensuring board accountability for both clinical and corporate standards of governance
Conclusions and Recommendations
Recognising the need to scan the environment, and have intellectual flexibility within the services we were working enabled us to have impact on the quality of service development and delivery, and improve outcomes for
patients and users. Service delivery and staff management issues have been addressed and quality and performance targets have been met.
